Indoor plants; and why you need them!

There are many amazing benefits to having an indoor garden. Plants have the ability to create a feeling of calm, well being, whilst also reducing stress. Not to mention they are beautiful to look at! Here's 5 other reasons why you should keep some plants of your own.

1. They improve air quality by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air and increasing the amount of oxygen. Although this is a well know fact, what is less know is that they actually switch at night, and instead take in oxygen. (More about this later) Plants also increase humidity, which can be very helpful during dry winter months at preventing colds as well as ensuring your skin doesn't become too dry.
2. They clean the air by reducing air pollutants emitted by common household items such as flooring and furniture as well as chemicals released from air fresheners and cleaning products. They are also able to reduce the amount of airborne dust within the room.
3. They make you happy by providing you with the responsibility of caring for a living thing. This instills a sense of accomplishment, confidence and purpose. Caring for plants has been shown to be helpful for people suffering from depression and anxiety for this reason.
4. They help the immune system by building up a tolerance to the allergens that are found in plants. By exposing children to these allergens at a young age, their bodies won't (or to a lesser extent) experience allergic reactions to these allergens later in life.
5. They improve sleep by increasing oxygen levels at night. As I said earlier, most plants release oxygen during the day, and small amount of carbon dioxide at night. Well, some plants do the opposite and release oxygen at night, helping to keep oxygen levels high whilst you sleep. By having a mix of these two types of plants, oxygen levels will always be beneficial!

So, now you know (some of) the benefits of keeping indoor plants, what plants do you actually get? Here's a list of just a few relatively easy to care for plants that can easily be grown indoors:
- Peace Lily
- Boston Fern
- Mother in Law's Tongue
- Aloe Vera
- English Ivy
- Lavender
If you have any indoor plants already, I would love to know what types as I'm always adding to my collection!
